Today is the 34 year anniversary of the death of PigPen. In honor of the MAN/MYTH/LEGEND, pick yourself out your favorite PigPen song, and LISTEN to the magic... Maybe also an appropriate favorite version of He's Gone, or Black Peter just for good measure.

Found out last week I'll be out of town most of that week and part of the weekend. This year has one of the best line-ups I think I've seen. Crap, what I won't do to pay the bills (OK, let's all grow up rignt now and save the sophmoric quips on what me and my hollow will do for cash).

This was one of the first shows I received from the kind-hearted Mr. Wolf. If you are inferring that, like the Gibson movie "Signs", I would have to wear a tin foil hat to prevent the alien power of Prime-Pig-Powered-Dead entering my skull, you are most definitely correct sir. The GMLSG opener just rips.

I'll hoist a pint to Pigpen tonight and throw on two of my early favorites. Maybe not Pigpen heavy, but great shows from my home town.

2.2.68 Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR
2 Pigpen harmonica solos in Schoolgirl.

I always remember this day by taking a shot of cheap whiskey and listening to a compilation of Pig's best that serves the occassion well.

A lot of folks say that the Pigpen years are not their style--but, no matter what, Blue Ron was as nice a man as you could find, and he sure could belt it out.

Nitties.

I did a 6cd comp.
2 cds from the Keith years
2cds from 1971 (One from the Fillmore gigs)
2 cds from 1969-1970
2 cds from 1968-69

not much is repeated except Smokestack Lightning and Lovelight.
Surprisingly, he performed only around 20 songs all told!

There isn't really a bad one. Feb 14 1970, Fillmore east. feb 8, Fillmore West (both on Bear's Choice). Later that year, the one with Elvin Bishop sitting in (0n archive 6-06-69 (blistering);. Portchester Feb 19 1971, Felt Forum, Dec.02 1971 ("I been gone so long"--he had). March 251972 Academy of Music (on DP)--and the two from 1966 (Although the Kingbee-Smokestack date debate rages on).

Oh--El Monte Dec 28 1970 comes in a close second. Boston 12-02-71 is okay, but he was just getting back in the groove.

When the Pig was on, he was ON!!

Here's a couple of eternal favorites, unfortunately no longer available on LMA, but essential to anyone's Pigpen collection:

4/17/71 Princeton--SDH turned me onto this one some time back & it's one honey of a show. See here for the famed Brooklyn Bridge Lovelight...

4/14/72 Copenhagen--Europe '72, Pig takin the place like a virgin on prom night.

Peace, folks...and Rest in Peace, Ron...

Hey guys...

I think when last anyone heard of me I was starting back to work...in point of fact, I'm about a half hour away from leaving out again (4-midnight, then 6-4 tomorrow...wa-hoo...)

My schedule is starting to re-stablize & after taking some time off from just about everything including here (lurk though I have from time to time...)I'm getting back into my stride. Life actually is working out okay--or is at least headed back in that direction. I'll doubtlessly be around.

I have missed you folks.

Peace.

Good to hear things are heading in the right direction once again. The ship has righted itself, so to speak. Wouldn't be in such a hurry to get back to this place, though. I hear we're not so good at the whole "motivation" thing, unless your sole motivation is to buy 1000 GB's of new memory for your PC, lock the door, refuse to bathe and do nothing but download shows. If that IS your goal, you're in the right place.

Ooops, a gross oversight on my part...

After mentioning the Princeton & Copenhagen shows earlier, it's since occurred to me that the Euphoria Ballroom, 7/16/70 has to be included for Pigpen homage. Sound quality's not the best, but Pig & Janis throwing down on what has to be one of the wildest, raunchiest Lovelight's ever more than compensates.

MUD!!! Where you been? Good to see you pop up here, missed your Maine-tainted input round these parts. Hope all is well DownEast. As I told Cliff, this 2/14/68 is a fantastic recording of some sweet acid-infused early Dead. Hope we hear more from you.
